Varzi in the Bugatti Type 51s und Nuvolari in the Alfa Romeo 8C, Monaco 1933
Description
This Formula-1 motorsport art print by Alan Fearnley depicts a scene from the Grand Prix of Monaco in 1933, which was one of the greatest, if not the greatest Grand Prix of all time. It was the first occasion where the grid would be decided by timed qualifying, rather than the luck of the draw. Pole position was a lap record of 2 minutes and 02 seconds, going to Varzi in a Bugatti type 51s. The three major marques competing, Monza Alfa 8CS, Bugatti Type 51s and Maserati 8CMS, were evenly matched and the bitter rivalry between Tazio Nuvolari, the 40 year old who's fiery driving style was a real crowd pleaser, and Achille Varzi, at 29 years old, the "Mr Cool" of the circuit, famous for never crashing, provided the additional ingredients to make for a great race. The race was thrilling, with Nuvolari and Varzi fighting for the lead throughout the 100 lap race. On the penultimate lap, Varzi went to the front and in doing so became the first man to record a lap under 2 minutes at Monaco, only for Nuvolari to regain the lead at the start of the final lap. During this last lap, Nuvolari's oil line split allowing Varzi to pass and go on to win the race. Nuvolari's car caught fire but he drove on refusing all help. When the car eventually came to a halt, still in flames he tried to push the car over the line, but failed. Sadly later he was disqualified.
