Indianapolis 500

 'Indy 500' by Peter Helck (1894-1988) is a motorsport art poster published by Greenwich Workshop in 1986 for the 75th commemoration of the Indianapolis 500 mile race. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in August 1909, but at the first race meeting everyone knew the surface was sadly inadequate. After being paved with 3,200,000 bricks, the speedway became known as the "Brickyard," a nickname which lasted until it was completely paved in 1961. On Memorial Day, 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 was held. Artist Peter Helck portrayed the first Indy winner, Ray Harroun, in his yellow Marmon as he vied for the lead with David Bruce Brown in a red Fiat.
