Flug zum Absprungplatz
This aviation art print by Mark Postlethwaite depicts Junkers 188s of I/KG6 transiting from Chievres, Belgium to Münster-Handorf before their night bombing raid on London, 15th October 1943. Five Ju-188s took off headed for London that night but only two returned. The bombers had been unlucky enough to run into the Mosquito night fighters of 85 Squadron. Leutnant Karl Geyr and his crew in 3E+HH were attacked just after leaving London. With the fuel tanks on fire and all but the pilot wounded, the bomber spiralled out of control and crashed near Birchington in Kent. Itwas only the second Ju 188 to fall on British soil, the first being Hauptmann Waldecker's aircraft a few minutes earlier. Sadly, only Karl Geyr survived the crash and it is he who has signed this edition. Mr. Geyr helped a lot with the research into the painting including his distinct recol lection that on these first missions the aircraft flew with the standard pale blue undersurfaces, a fact that he suggests contributed to their demise!
