Description

Heinkel's He 178 took off for it's first successful flight on 27 August 1939. The experimental aircraft was specially designed for the installation of the first operational jet air turbine of the He-S3B type. The air for the turbine was from the nose, piped under the pilot's seat, led to the built-in engine in the middle of the fuselage and from there through a slightly conical exhaust pipe to the tail end. At the oval outlet control valves were installed, which could be closed for high-speed flights. The aviation art print The First Jet by Ronald Wong is available as a Giclée-print (Print on Demand).
