Chris Woods Short Biography

Chris Woods was born in Winchester, New Hampshire in 1932. He studied art at the Winchester School of Art and at the Southern College of Art in Southampton. While still at school, he developed a keen interest in steam locomotives, and consequently spent many hours of his spare time visiting the engine sheds in Eastleigh, Salisbury and Bournemouth.

Most of his life was spent printing and publishing art in various parts of the country, including Cambridge, Dorset and Cornwall. In 1984 he began painting full-time, which allowed him to revisit his early fondness for steam locomotives and capture them on canvas. His work has sold through leading galleries such as Harrods, as well as solo exhibitions. More than thirty of his paintings have been published as open and limited edition art prints and greeting cards. In 1993, a coffee table book with 40 illustrations and descriptions of his nostalgic steam locomotive paintings was published under the title "A Romance of Steam: Railway Paintings of Chris Woods".
