This F1 motorsport art print by Alan Fearnley depicts Baron Emanuel de Graffenried winning the 1949 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, driving a Maserati 4CLT.
In 1949 Silverstone Circuit was granted Grande Epreuve Status and the RAC renamed the race there the British Grand Prix. Many changes were incorporated into the track, and a straw bale chicane was introduced at Club corner to force the use of Iow gears and make the lap distance exactly three miles. Baron Emanuel "Toulo" de Graffenried drove in the privately entered Maserati 4CLT under the team banner of "Scuderia Enrico Plate" which was owned by de Graffenried, a friend and the Chief Mechanic Enrico Plate. The Baron achieved his win by racing at an average speed of 77.31 mph (124.39 kph). Second place was taken by Bob Gerrard in his Era.
The Baron started racing when he was 21 and his first race was the Mille Miglia. He drove with the Alfa Formula 1 team for two years along with Juan Manuel Fangio and his racing career continued until 1957, when his last race was the Italian Grand Prix.
This limited edition print is taken from an original oil painting by Alan Fearnley, and this particular event was chosen to commemorate the first "Grand Epreuve" race at Silverstone.
