Description
This aviation art print from Michael Rondot portrays a familiar sight along the coast of the UK during the 1960s. A Westland Whirlwind helicopter flies over a beach on a bright, sunny day with the winchman and navigator waving to holidaymakers below from the cabin door. Happy days, with no clue that the helicopter's crew may be en-route to an urgent rescue situation that will require all their skill and daring. Although their primary function is the rescue of downed aircrews, RAF search and rescue squadrons have traditionally spent most of their time in support of civilian emergencies. Their daring exploits and dramatic rescue operations frequently brought Whirlwind SAR crews enormous media attention during the 1960s, making the "Yellow Helicopter" one of the best-known elements of the Royal Air Force.
